S for Sound, S for Solidarity, Episode 9:
“Listening Lounge”
Featuring Cancel Culture Club & Spa (CCC&S)

S for Sound, S for Solidarity: Listening Lounge is a collective listening session & sauna of S for Sound, S for Solidarity - episode 9 Cancel Culture Club & Spa Radio: Connecting the Dots featuring Hanan Benammar, Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld & Careen Koleilat. We will listen to the episode at Haraldslund Vand- og Kulturhus in a relaxing setting experiencing the episode as it is broadcasted live on Radio alHara. Prior to the launch of the episode there is the possibility to take part in a sauna.

This ninth episode of SfS, SfS dives into Cancel Culture Club & Spa, an exhibition and symposium held at Nitja Centre for Contemporary Art in Lillestrøm, Norway, in 2024. Organized by Hanan Benammar and Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld in collaboration with Miriam Haile, the project brought together more than 30 artists and cultural workers from the Nordic region and beyond, all of whom have been subjected in different forms of cancellations, intimidations, and attacks. In this episode, Benammar, Dirckinck-Holmfeld, and CCC&S fellow Careen Koleilat discuss how these power mechanisms operate specifically within the Nordic region, as well as the background for making the project and its future trajectories. The conversation is interwoven with montages and excerpts with the voices of the participants who presented their cases at CCC&S.

A special thanks to Radio alHara, Haraldslund Vand- og Kulturhus og Morten Poulsen for helping in the realization of this project.

Cancel Culture Club & Spa (CCC&S) is a performative project centered around conviviality, community, and solidarity, gathering artists, art workers, scholars, and activists from across the Nordic region and beyond. CCC&S is a platform to exchange, analyze, and critically engage with the phenomenon of widespread cases of censorship, attacks, and intimidations against artistic practices situated at the intersection between emancipatory politics, institutional critique, and solidarity movements. The project appropriates the term “cancel culture” as a form of satire, self-critique, and political commentary. By subverting the use of the term, the aim is to dissect the anatomy of these cases, refine our strategies, and sharpen our tools of resistance.

Hanan Benammar is an Algerian / French artist based in Oslo, Norway educated at l'Ecole Supérieure d'Arts de Rueil-Malmaison, Paris, France, the Oslo National Academy of the Arts (KhiO), Oslo, Norway, the Dutch Art Institute, Arnhem, The Netherlands and the Royal Institute of Art in Stockholm, Sweden. Benammar works conceptually between geopolitical, environmental, and societal issues with projects that usually unfold over a long period of time and materialise as sound and video installations, performances, music, sculpture, and interventions in public space. She also curates, organises, and initiates collective endeavours and platforms as a part of her art practice and is a core organizer of CCC&S.

Katrine Dirckinck-Holmfeld, PhD, is a visual artist, postdoctoral researcher, and educator born in Aalborg, Denmark. Working across audio, video essays, installation, performance, and text, she collaborates with communities to explore historical residues and reassemble their fragments into new compositions. For the past two decades, her work has developed around what she terms reparative praxis. She holds a PhD from the University of Copenhagen, an MFA from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts, and an MA in Contemporary Art Theory from Goldsmiths, University of London. She is co-founder of the Reparative Encounters network, Sorte Firkant, bar and cultural venue and core organizer of CCC&S.

Careen Koleilat is a Lebanese-Palestinian trans/non-binary filmmaker, artistic researcher, and creative entrepreneur working across film, sound, and research. Their practice explores diasporic storytelling, experimental narrative forms, and the shifting relationship between audience and filmmaker, often using sound and sensory elements to create immersive spaces where distance and closeness resonate. Educated in Beirut, London, and Gothenburg, Koleilat holds an MFA in Film from HDK-Valand and have completed postgraduate studies in the UK. They co-founded Blue Fox Studios, a queer-led post-production studio based in London and Dubai, centred on inclusive and decolonial approaches to film post-production. They were a fellow at CCC&S, and this SfS, SfS episode was recorded at their studio in Gothenburg, Sweden.
